The old deck had to go. It wasn't up to code, and honestly it wasn't doing the backyard any favors. So we pulled it down completely and started from scratch - new framing, new footings, the whole thing. That's the only way to do it right.
From the ground up, we built the substructure to handle everything sitting on top of it - a wide open deck surface, multiple staircase runs, and built-in benches that double as permanent seating along the perimeter. The framing work alone tells the story. Every joist, beam, and stringer was laid out clean and square before a single board of decking went down.
For the surface, we went with TimberTech composite decking. No staining, no sealing, no worrying about rot or splinters down the road. It holds up in the heat, handles moisture, and keeps its look year after year. That gray tone also pairs well with just about any outdoor furniture, which you can see worked out nicely here.
The wire railing was one of our favorite details on this build. It keeps the view open to the tree line and gives the whole space a sharp, modern edge without feeling overdone. Three separate staircases connect different levels of the yard, so getting around the space actually feels intuitive rather than awkward.
End result - a backyard that finally works. There's a dedicated dining area under the pavilion, a lounge zone with plenty of seating, and room to move around without it feeling cramped. That's what a well-planned outdoor deck build should do.
